Where you'll stay
Old captain's-house proportions, brass beds and deep baths, and windows that all somehow find the water. Choose the one that suits the kind of quiet you're after.
Right up under the eaves, with a dormer window you can throw wide open onto the whole harbour. Watch the day boats come in with a coffee in hand before anyone else is awake. A brass bed, a slope of ceiling, and gulls for an alarm clock.
Our quietest room, tucked at the back with its own door onto the walled garden. Named for the harbour pilots who once lodged here between tides. A deep roll-top bath, soft linen, and nothing louder at night than the fig tree brushing the glass.
The big corner room, with two tall windows over the water and a roll-top bath you can soak in while the light shifts across the bay. Room enough to spread out, linger over the papers, and lose track of which day it is. Our finest view, and our slowest checkout.
From the house
We've lived on this quay long enough to have opinions. Skip the guidebook — here are the three things we'd genuinely go and do ourselves, and where we'd send our own friends.
Turn left out of the door and keep the sea on your right. Forty minutes of gorse and grazing sheep brings you to Vellan Head, where the path narrows and the whole bay opens up beneath you. Go at golden hour, and take the low-tide route back across the strand if you've timed it right.
Down the far end of the quay, past the boatyard. No menu online and no bookings after seven — just whatever came off the day boats, chalked on a board by the door. Order the crab, sit outside on the wall, and let them tell you what's good tonight. Tell Bri that Harbour House sent you.
A ten-minute climb up the coastguard steps behind the church brings you to a whitewashed daymark and a single weathered bench. It's the best seat in Porthenys and almost always empty. Carry a flask up for the sunset and you'll have the whole horizon to yourselves.
Your hosts
We're Sam and Elowen. We bought Harbour House with the paint peeling and half the roof gone, mostly because neither of us could stop looking at the view. Ten years on we've raised two children here, learned to bake at five in the morning, and still haven't tired of the harbour. We keep the house the way we'd want to be kept ourselves — proper coffee, warm rooms, and the honest local know-how you only get from people who actually live here. Come and slow down with us.
